I'm one of the unlucky ones whose face started breaking out in junior high and a decade later is still dealing with it. I have truly, truly tried everything from home remedies and natural products to dermatologist-prescribed medications and antibiotics. I finally found a combo of topical and oral medications that, save for the few random zits here or there, has worked pretty well, but I can't tell you how many times I've prayed for an acne cure and a magical potion to make all the skin breakouts go away.
According to Allure, that magic potion might actually become a reality in the near future thanks to a team of scientists at the University of California San Diego who are working to develop an acne vaccine. Lead researcher Eric C. Huang told Allure:
Acne is caused, in part, by P. acnes bacteria that are with you your whole life — and we couldn't create a vaccine for the bacteria because, in some ways, P. acnes are good for you. But we found an antibody to a toxic protein that P. acnes bacteria secrete on skin — the protein is associated with the inflammation that leads to acne.
The only downside is that the vaccine is still in the testing phase and will be for the next two years, so hang tight until then, and try one of these foundations instead of picking at your face. Because trust me when I say the only thing worse than acne are the scars it leaves behind.
