While most us of probably aren't in the market for an eyelash shampoo, there are definite benefits to using one, especially for those in the fake lash-loving community.

And considering 2018 is set to be the year of out-of-this-world lashes, we're betting that more and more of you will be in need of one really soon.

According to Bridgette Softley, founder of popular lash brand Nouveau Lashes, lash shampoos are an essential for anyone who has eyelashes extensions. Yes, we totally get that a lash shampoo sounds pretty niche, but they actually work wonders for cleansing your existing lashes, as well as prolonging the life of your lash extensions.

What's unique about this purpose-specific shampoo is its ability to not only cleanse and moisturise your lashes — both fake and real — but also maintain the adhesive bonds (AKA lash glue) applied by your lash technician. "A lash shampoo will freshen your lash extensions to banish all impurities, bacteria and irritants," Bridgette told Glamour UK.

Yes, that's right, 'impurities, bacteria and irritants'. All that gross stuff actually lives on your eyelashes. Even products aimed at removing eye makeup can leave nasties behind. If longer lasting lashes aren't your major concern, then this gross piece of info should have you adding a lash shampoo to your carts in a heartbeat.

According to Bridgette, "a large amount of skincare products; eye make-up removers, cleansers, [and] moisturisers," which are largely oil-based, leave residue on your lashes, which will remain there until proper removal.

Not only are you leaving your eyes open to all kinds of germ exposure, but you're actually sabotaging the lifespan of your lash extensions. "The oily formula can loosen the bonds holding your lashes on, meaning you will need that infill appointment a lot sooner than you usually would!" said Bridgette, who notes that ensuring lash health is an important part of the post-treatment process.

Here, we've rounded up three eyelash shampoos to prolong the life of your extensions.
