Chrissy Teigen opens up about her struggles with alcohol

'I was, point blank, just drinking too much.'

One of the things we love most about Chrissy Teigen is that she’s an open book. Using her signature wit, Chrissy has used her profile to speak up about a lot of important issues, including postpartum depression and body image.

During a recent conversation with Cosmopolitan US, Chrissy spoke about her ongoing struggles with alcohol. With a history of alcohol abuse in her family, the 31-year-old is starting to realise she’s not the kind of person who can just have one drink.

As a high flying celebrity, Chrissy is often surrounded by free booze at events, in her dressing room – basically everywhere. And until recently, she was taking advantage of the alcohol on offer. To the point where she took herself to a wellness retreat in Bali to reset her health. [Note: Not rehab, just a wellness retreat.]

"I was, point blank, just drinking too much," Chrissy told Cosmo. "I got used to being in hair and makeup and having a glass of wine. Then that glass of wine would carry over into me having one before the awards show. And then a bunch at the awards show. And then I felt bad for making kind of an ass of myself to people that I really respected. And that feeling, there's just nothing like that. You feel horrible. It's not a good look for me, for John, for anybody."

When the booze is free flowing and doesn’t come with a price tag, it’s easy to get carried away, Chrissy explains. "Everything is there, always. I don't know how to go to an awards show and not drink."

"Nobody really brought it up to me," Chrissy said. "They just assumed that it was OK because I always felt OK the next morning. I knew in my heart it wasn't right. It makes you very short with people. People think it's cutesy and fun to go on these boozy brunches, but there's more to it. I've never once been like, 'I'm sure glad I had that boozy brunch!'"

However, after taking some time away from booze in Bali, she’s feeling more like herself.
