Cosmo chats: Joss Stone

The 24-year-old first burst onto the music scene back in 2001 and has sold over 11 million albums, making her one of the best-selling artists of her time. We caught up with the talented singer to talk through her new album, LP1.

You’re so young, but you’ve already had such a stellar career. What else would you like to achieve? Lots of things, as long they are fun to do! I would really like to see and sing in every country .

You recently went to the royal wedding – can you tell us about it? It was a beautiful wedding – I went to the church for the ceremony; it was so lovely, very fairy tale.

You’ve branched into acting – has it always been on your to-do list? Will you pursue more opportunities? I would like to do more, it is definitely a lot of fun.

You’ve performed with so many amazing artists – James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, Herbie Hancock – who else is on your hit list? I love to collaborate, so whenever I get the opportunity to do it, I am a happy girl. I would love to sing with Anita Baker – she is amazing!

What can we expect from your album? 10 very heartfelt songs. We had a blast making it. It was a whirlwind; very spontaneous, although with this band, they are so good, so quick, you would thought we worked on it for a month .

You’ve been quoted as saying that you endorse piracy, because you want as many people as possible to hear your music. Do you still think that way?
I have never said I "endorse" it, but hey, I guess you can use whichever word you choose. I think you can look at things half full or empty; I’m gonna go for half full on this one. The beauty of the free download is that people can share music, and also if you can't afford to spend 15 quid on an album, you can still have the joy it brings. It's nice when people pay for it, it's even nicer when you know they don't have to. Joss Stone's latest album LP1 is out now from getmusic.com.au/jossstone.
