After she posted a comparison shot to Instagram revealing how her body has changed over her years in the industry, Demi Lovato told Access Hollywood she’s damn proud of her body – and she think women like Kim Kardashian and Beyonce are the reason for it.
“When I was growing up and when I was a pre-teen, the people that I had to look up to [for] body image [were] extremely underweight,” she confessed. “[They] were all very bony at that time and that was the in thing.”
“I really credit women like Beyonce and Kim Kardashian. [They] completely revolutionised our generation’s view… of what beautiful is. You can think whatever you want about the Kardashians, but they really did help tones of women feel comfortable in their own skin, and I like to carry that message on.” Like it or not, she’s got a point.
Demi has plenty of experience struggling with body issues – in 2010, she attended treatment for eating disorders, and since has done her best to be a positive role model for young women dealing with the pressure to be thin.
“There was nobody out there for me to look at and say, maybe this is unhealthy. Maybe starving myself isn’t the answer,” the 22-year-old told Ellen DeGeneres in 2011. “There needs to be a role model out there, and for the first time in my life, I actually feel like one.”
Demi is also an active spokesperson for LGBT rights, having been named the LA Pride Parade Grand Marshal in May of this year, and is the face of Human Rights Campaign’s ‘Americans for Marriage Equality’.
Way to go, Demi!
