Demi Lovato was reportedly partying with friends when she suffered an alleged drug overdose, and it was her mates who helped keep her alive.
While emergency audio obtained by TMZ seems to suggest Demi was unconscious when paramedics arrived, a source close to the singer told People her friends revived her using Narcan, a drug that reverses the effects of narcotics.
"They keep Narcan on hand for such situations – they were prepared for this," the source said.
Although initial reports claimed Demi had overdosed on heroin, her management said in a statement, "some of the information being reported is incorrect".
Demi's hospitalisation has elicited an outpouring of support from her celebrity friends, including Justin Bieber.
When asked by TMZ whether he'd spoken to Demi, Justin said: "No I haven't talked to her, but my prayers go out to her and her family for sure. I thought she was sober, that's terrible, right?"
Demi's battle has also prompted a renewed conversation about the gravity of addiction.
Kelly Osbourne, who herself has struggled with addiction, said she understood exactly what Demi was going through.
"People need to know rehab doesn't fix you, it just helps you to get yourself on the right track," Kelly said. "You're never fixed. You spend your whole entire life doing everything you can to never pick up and use again."
