Unless you've been somehow disconnected from pop culture for most of 2017, you must at least have some knowledge of the success Cardi B — the abrasive, hilarious female rapper who managed to change the game and make 2017 her bishhhh.
But, what many wonder (Australians especially) is how Cardi — real name Belcalis Almanzar — became not just one of the most-talked-about hip hop artists of the moment, but one of the most successful artists of the past year. Let us break it down for you, if you don't know already.

Born and raised in The Bronx in NYC, Grammy-nominated Cardi was a stripper before anything, admitting on an early episode of Kocktails With Khloé (OMG remember that show??) that she hid her stripping work from her family and said she was babysitting instead.
According to TIME, Cardi became a known Internet personality around the same time she was stripping, with her hilarious Instagram and Vine videos helping her become a known Internet figure. People were drawn to her effervescent, no-bullshit personality, and before long she'd landed herself a spot on VH1's reality show Love & Hip Hop: New York.
Cardi's personality and penchant for drama on the show saw her fame increase tenfold - watch below and you'll see exactly what we mean.
After dabbling in reality television, Cardi's breakout single "Bodak Yellow" became the song of the summer in the US - she attained the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, knocking Taylor Swift's 'Look What You Made Me Do' from its perch (but DW, Taylor and Cardi are sweet - Taylor even sent her flowers to congratulate her for her success).
Cardi's #1 song became unexpected history - she became the first female rapper with no features to top the charts since Lauryn Hill in 1998. Talk about a timely feat.
Since then, Cardi has been nominated for two Grammy Awards, and released hit single 'Bartier Cardi' (quote Cardi: "I named it 'Bartier' Cardi because I didn't want Cartier to sue me"), as well as being featured on Bruno Mars' 'Finesse', and in the incredibly '90s video (as well as a performance at the Grammys, no less).
And, aside from balancing her rap career and emerging stardom, Cardi continues to have probably one of the funniest Instagrams of all time. We're not kidding.
Oh, we also forgot to mention that she's engaged to Offset from Migos, and that the engagement ring is so large it could probably feed four small nations.
So, if anyone asks you to rap a verse from "Bodak Yellow" from now on - you honestly have no excuse.
