We knew it was coming soon, but at last we have an official release date – and a name! – for Lady Gaga’s new album.

Joanne will be in your ears on October 21 (which might mean October 22 for Australian fans), and judging by the cover art which the Lady herself tweeted on Friday, Gaga is headed in a new, exciting direction.

So, what/who is Joanne? In an interview with Zane Lowe on radio program Beats 1 on Friday, she explained the album is named after her aunt Joanne who died at age 19 from Lupus, and how her death changed and shaped Gaga’s life afterwards.

"I returned to my home life and spending time with my friends and family and getting out of the mainstream limelight for a minute, [and] the experiences of our family and our challenges that make us who we are,” she said.

“It’s everything about Joanne ... it’s all the toughness of the pain of losing her that made us all strong and made us who we are. She is the woman of my past who is becoming and helping me bring more of my honest woman self into the future."

In the interview, Gaga revealed Joanne will feature a variety of music styles including Bollywood influences and country music, and spoke specifically about one song in particular, “John Wayne”, which is about her "incessant need to run after wild men and somehow get bored of the same old John.”

Meanwhile the first song to drop from Joanne, “Perfect Illusion”, is smashing its way up the charts – according to Billboard, it looks set to have 100,000 downloads in its first week and is expected is debut in the Billboard top 20 next week.
