Lena Dunham just gave our Instagram feeds a big ol’ dose of reality by sharing a bikini selfie that has definitely not been photoshopped.
The Girls creator posted an Instagram Story of herself in a bikini looking in a bathroom mirror, which revealed her scars resulting from endometriosis, a reproductive organ condition she’s been open about battling.
"When the Target swimsuit does a bitch right, Endo scars & all,” she captioned the pic.
As Lena explained in a recent Lenny Letter post, endometriosis is “when the tissue that lines the uterus grows in other places in the body. This usually means on the ovaries, in the abdominal cavity, and on the bladder and major organs like the liver and kidneys (though, in rare cases, the errant tissue has been found as far away as the brain). The menstrual cycle causes the tissue to swell and bleed, causing pain, fatigue, nausea, gastrointestinal problems, and a host of other physical symptoms.”
It affects around one in ten women (so chances are one of you reading this right now has it. If so, wishing you health, healing and strong over-the-counter drugs).
Lena’s ‘endo’ got so bad earlier this year that she had to skip a press tour for Girls, and she wrote in an Instagram post that the show had been totally supportive as she battled a debilitating flare-up.
“I'm lucky enough to have support and backup from Jenni, Judd and the whole Girls gang. So many women with this disease literally don't have the option of time off and I won't take it for granted.
Amongst all the flat tummy and thigh gap shots blowing up our feeds on a daily basis, it really does help when someone throws a reality check in there, doesn’t it? Thank you, Lena.
