This Is Us is basically the best, most heart-wrenching TV show in the history of TV shows. That isn't a matter of debate, that's a matter of historical document. Buuuuut if you put a gun to our heads and forced us to criticise the series for one thing, it would be that it has set incredibly high (read: impossible) expectations for us in terms of what we want out of a husband/boyfriend. Toby? Basically the best boyfriend ever. Randall? The coolest Dad ever. Even Kevin has some cute AF moments (THINK OF THE PIE THING. And the wife thing).
But Jack — perfect perfect Jack — takes the cake. In fact, I'm pretty sure there's going to be a scientifically documented phenomena called "The Jack Effect" in which women in 2017 leave their mediocre BFs en masse because of the idea that a man who will treat them like Jack treats Rebecca exists in the world.
Yes, he has his flaws (many of which come to light in the heart-wrenching finale), but as a rule Jack is the closest thing to a "perfect" husband and father as we've seen on screen. And Milo Ventimiglia knows this. When asked at a panel discussion for This Is Us about the high expectations Jack had set for men in terms of father/husband goals, Milo got all choked-up talking about how the character of Jack is based on his actual dad. Added points: His dad was SITTING IN THE AUDIENCE.
The audio on this tape is pretty sketchy, so here's what Milo actually says: "[The show's creator] Dan Fogelman wrote this man who loves his wife and loves his kids, really simple as that. And I saw that..." (This is where Milo stars tearing up and our hearts start breaking into 1,000 pieces.) "I saw that in my own father. And there's not a moment of my life where I don't think about how he raised us, my sisters and I, and what he gave me, just as a man. So, my dad [inspired Jack]."
Here's some actual footage of me after watching that:
So now, let's look at an unlimited stream of what I will affectionately call, #JackPorn. Or, all the times Jack was the man of your actual dreams:
