Pete Davidson defends controversial call to give Ariana Grande his late dad's badge

Fans aren't thrilled about the sweet gesture.

Oh lordy, it seems lovebirds Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson can't helping pissing people off no matter how hard they try, with one of Pete's Instagram posts prompting fans to lash out at him for being "disrespectful".

Pete, 24, shared a snap of his fiancée Ariana, 25, wearing a necklace bearing his late father's New York City Fire Department (FDNY) badge.

Tragically, Pete's firefighter dad, Scott, died during the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001. Pete was seven years old at the time.

The badge bears Scott's official FDNY number, 8418.

But not everyone was impressed by the show of support from Ari. In fact, quite the opposite.

"No girl should ever wear your dad's chain," one commenter wrote. "So disrespectful."

Other fans pondered whether Pete had already made a similar gesture ...with his ex, Cazzie David.

"Didn't you give this to Caz too," one wrote.

"At least one other girlfriend has worn it, I wonder if his fiancée knew that," another said.

But Pete was ready to leap to Ari's defence, writing: "For ur information that's not just some girl, that's my fiancé. She's the greatest person I know. I gave it to her because she has my heart and that is the most precious thing I own. My dad would be so happy and love her so much."

Ariana responded to Pete's post by commenting: "I love u more than anything."

The singer has gone even further to show respect to her fiance's late dad, getting the number 8418 tattooed on the top of her foot.

Pete also has the digits on his forearm.

It's not clear whether Pete gifted his badge to his ex since he's deleted all his Instagram posts of her, but here's a snap of him wearing it while with Cazzie, from her Instagram account.

If he did, in fact, give the badge to Cazzie too then it's not the first time he's been accused of doubling up on romantic gestures in his new relationship.

Fans of Ariana have trawled through Pete's Instagram to find moments where he's said similar things to both Cazzie and Ari.

He's just got a lot of love to give, alright? Leave the man alone.
