Ahead of their 2018 wedding Prince Harry and his fiancée Meghan Markle have released their official engagement portraits, and boy do they stray from royal tradition.
Shot by celebrity and fashion photographer Alexi Lubomirski – a former assistant to Mario Testino, who took William and Kate's first official images – Haz and Meg's candid and intimate new pics look like something straight out of a Burberry campaign.
And while the photos are so very beautiful, the visual statement they're making is even more important.
Historically speaking, the Suits actress' is anything but a conventional match for the Prince for many reasons: she's American, she is older (Markle is 36, Harry 33), she's been married and divorced, her acting career means she's starred in raunchy sex scenes, and she's biracial (Meghan's mother is black).
The new pictures are another indication of Princes William and Harry's distinct goal of living whole, happy lives; that includes marrying for love, not duty.
William, who is third-in-line to the British throne, was a bachelor for years longer than expected and the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, was 29-years-old when the Prince finally proposed.
While the public had to wait years for on-again off-again William and Kate to decide if a royal marriage was for them, their relationship seems to be a happy and authentic one, unlike William's parents.
It's of course known that a 31-year-old Prince Charles was some what forced by his family to consider 20-year-old Lady Diana Spencer as his future wife. This lack of enthusiasm about Diana can kinda be seen in the couple's royal engagement photo; young Diana's arms are wrapped around her beau but, as he sits smiling his body language is somewhat indifferent to her touch.
Harry and Meghan's touchy-feely portraits are also a far cry from the stiff photos of royal generations gone by. The Queen and Prince Phillip for example, who celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year, seem very happy in their engagement announcement, but are hardly touching.
However, while the no touch rule continues, their marriage has stood the test of time.
And since binge watching The Crown's season 2, we expected a much raunchier official royal pic from our new fave royal, Princess Margaret, But the late Princess and Lord Snowdon went with a v-traditional smile and gaze, just like her older sister.
As for Meghan and Harry, while it's true they're not a conventional royal match, they the don't seem to want to hide that. Their new loved up engagement portraits are clearly telling the world, 'Hey, we're not gonna be the same stuffy royals you're used to seeing so get ready!'
And with that dgaf attitude we think they'll get to 70 years in love easily 💖
