Rise of the underbutt

Celebrities are rocking the “I forgot my pants” look in droves.

Rise of the underbutt

Celebs have been revealing cleavage for years (hello, Anne Hathaway’s nipple-peeping Oscars dress), but it seems that a different type of cleavage is on-trend right now – butt cleavage. We know it’s summer in the Northern Hemisphere (as photos of celebs frocking on boats are kindly reminding us), but short-shorts seem to be getting, er, even shorter, which equals a front row view of the underside of celebrity booties. Introducing, the underbutt.

Rihanna, Ellie Goulding and Cara Delevingne are repeat offenders of sporting underbutt-revealing shorts. But the biggest offender would have to be Miley Cyrus. Lately she’s been seen performing, partying and, well, just doing everything sans pants that cover her bum. We can hardly blame her though, the girl does have an amazing derriere.

But trust Rihanna to take the uber-revealing trend too far: as you can see in the photo below, she’s taken to rocking G-string denim shorts. Seriously RiRi, you may as well just have worn undies only.

In a case of art imitating life, ASOS, Topshop and other high street stores have begun pumping out bottom-skimming Daisy Dukes. But beware, these shorts aren’t flattering on everyone, we think some seriously Pilates time would be needed before we dared to bare. And, surprisingly, guys certainly aren’t into the trend:Esquire UK recently lamented, “The human backside has looked perfectly fantastic while fully covered for hundreds of years now. Buy some bigger shorts."

Easy for dudes to say, they’ve been able to wear shorts forever, it wasn’t until 1890 that a culotte-style garment was invented so that chicks could take advantage of new transportation technology (the bicycle), while keeping their modesty intact. Around 40 years later, short-shorts followed when tennis star Alice Marble caused controversy by rocking up to a match in a loose pair of “skimpy” shorts that fell to the knee.

But it was Marilyn Monroe who made short-shorts officially cool in the 50s and Catherine Bach made denim cut-offs iconic in TV series The Dukes of Hazzard. Other famous underbutt revealers? Kylie Minogue in the famous gold hotpants she wore in her Spinning Around video clip and Pamela Anderson as CJ on the set of Baywatch of course.

Will you embrace the underbutt trend come summer? We’re not sure it’ll be number one on our “must try” list…
