Our Fashion Editor went to NZFW and dressed like Kim Kardashian for the week

Here's what happened...

By Deni Todorovic

I was recently invited to attend New Zealand Fashion Week and as the Fashion Editor of Cosmo and someone who loves nothing more than an excuse to dress up, putting together ~lewks~ for Fashion Week was my dream job. When I started initially thinking about what I'd like to wear, I noticed I kept finding myself drawn to a combination of sportswear and anything urban. Bike shorts in particular, pared back with oversized jackets and sweaters.

As I looked in the mirror I realised the first look was very Kimmy K. Let's get this straight, I, Deni Todorovic FUCKING LOVE THE KARDASHIANS. I love their style, I watch their show, I hang on every single image posted, family scandal and trend they start. When Khloe and Lamar broke up, I felt like I was in the break-up. When Caitlyn transitioned, I sobbed in the Keeping Up two-episode special. Don't even get me started on Kim and Kanye's wedding. You get the picture.

Kim is undoubtedly my favourite Kardashian. Whilst I like them all for different reasons, she IMHO is this generation's Marilyn Monroe. Arguably the most iconic/influential woman of our time. I could write a whole essay as to why I feel this way but let's leave that for another day. In the meantime, the second I suggested to my editor that I dress like Kim for a week and document it for a story, there was a collective YASSS across the office.

Look 1: The Suit

An evening cocktail party to kick off NZFW called for a suit moment. Kim rocks a power look with ease, so I decided to channel an ensemble she recently sported for a red carpet event. KK wore hers sans shirt. So I decided to do the same, adding some jewellery to add interest to my hairy chest.

When it came to footwear, I thought I'd channel the Yeezy plastic heel Kim is so fond of. Let's call it the modern day 'glass slipper'.

Now, I've worn shoes like this before but only in boot form. What I failed to remember was how sweaty and frankly gross they get. So much so my fellow FROW-ers and I nicknamed them the 'fog shoe'. Shoes aside, this was easily one of my fave looks of the week! There's something so empowering about wearing a suit and the combination of that with the heels had me feeling like a serious BOSS!

Look 2: Yeezy Realness

To ease myself into my first full day of back-to-back shows I went with a classic 'Yeezy' look. That tonal beige colour palette, an oversized hoodie and cotton bike-shorts finished with a very good inspired-by version of the latest Yeezy 'Supermoon' sneaker, that you can buy HERE.

From the minute I sat at our 'Welcome to NZFW' brekky everyone could figure out exactly who I was channelling and we all had a good giggle over it. Apart from the fact that I was super comfortable for a day full of shows, I was quickly realising that outside of a gay dance party, men and bike shorts do not make friends.

Look 3: Ski Silver

The following day called for a more brave look. So I decided to go for a vibe inspired by Kimmy in some new season Yeezy. It's no secret that Kanye looks to sportswear for inspo and this look in particular had a very ski-suit meets bobsleigh team member feeling to it.

This outfit was perhaps one of the most challenging of the week. Firstly, it was the one I felt most uncomfortable in. The second I got out of the elevator and into the hotel lobby I lost count of the strange looks heading my way. It also quickly occurred to me that lycra and a penis leave little to the imagination. So I spent most of the morning covering my bulge anytime I had to introduce myself to someone.

By this stage, I was taking my Kimmy K role play quite seriously and decided to never slip out of character. So, after a 4am fire-alarm emergency evacuation of the hotel - yes seriously - I quickly asked myself what would Kim wear in an emergency?

A hoody and a fur coat obviously. Don't worry its faux.

Look 4: Neon Vibes

You may recall the article I wrote about Kim's latest obsession with neon. Not only Kardashian-specific, the whole fashion world is having a serious neon moment and I for one am living for it. Kim sported look-after-neon-look whilst on holidays in Miami last week, so I took her cue and improvised with the below.

Using my I.Am.Gia bomber to create a knot at the front, I made like Kim, cropped the top and added another pair of bike shorts for good measure. Way more comfortable in a stretch cotton but still less forgiving on the crotch.

I bloody loved this look, but after three hours of heels I quickly switched to runners. What a relief!

Look 5: Track Star

Take note, the white tank top is back and we're no longer calling it the 'beater' because duh. I have been advocating for us to bring this wardrobe staple Ryan Atwood so dearly loved back to the front of our wardrobes for the last two months. SO I was itching to make like Kimberly and pair it with a pair of Champion trackies (another hit of nostalgia), some ghetto jewels and heels for a morning of appointments.

What I failed to consider was that the majority of my appointments took place along a main street in a more suburban area of Auckland. At one point I heard a little girl ask her mother 'Why is that boy wearing heels Mum?' , to which she replied 'Because he can darling.'

Look 6: Sweat it up!

The Kardashian clan are big fans of an oversized sweater and by this point I'm thinking I could really get used to wearing nothing but sportswear tbh.

I voluntarily decided to dress this look up with the sock boots I wore earlier in the day and go to bed thinking I deserve a gold star for wearing heels ALL FREAKIN' DAY!

Look 7: Nearly Nude

For the last day of fashion week and my Kimmy challenge I decided to go a little classy. I love it when Kim does one thing really well. Like this killer camel blazer moment!

I decided to let my stylist-ways run free a little and pair this look with a lycra camel bike short, 'cos the jacket was just long enough. When it came to footwear I wanted to get a little creative with Kim's 'glass slipper' to avoid the shoes from fogging up. I loved the Fendi campaign Kim and momager Kris Jenner starred in recently, but considering my budget is somewhat more beer friendly I thought I'd get creative.

Spending the week dressed like Kim proved to be eye opening in more ways than one.

One: The woman is consistent and commits to a concept. This shit takes effort, preparation, fittings, planning and I was just copying her. I can't even begin to imagine how much time is spent by Team Kim coming up with each look.

Two: Power to all YOU kick ass women who wear heels day in, day out, round the clock. It is not easy and while my feet oddly got quite used to them by the end of the week I am more then happy to opt for sneakers for the next couple of days.

Three: Fashion truly is self expression and should be FUN. Real talk, 'farshun' people in big cities often take fashion week way too seriously. This I've always known but a week of playing dress ups in Auckland further cemented it. Paint a smile on your face and have some fun with it, we're all here to celebrate clothes after all.

Ru Paul famously says that we're all born naked and the rest is drag. He couldn't have been more spot on. All week I felt like I was playing a character yet also oddly felt more myself and confident than I often am in jeans and a t-shirt. I really embraced the notion that what you wear is armour and in these Kim inspired looks I really felt quite fearless. If that's not reason enough to love the woman, I don't know what is?!
