Spring Racing and Girl's Day Out ambassador, Carissa Walford, knows a thing or two about style, so we asked her advice for all things race day. Here's the low-down.
What should girls try to remember when coming up with an outfit for race day?
To think classy and elegant. I know for me I have an edgy, boho style off the race track so I really have to channel my inner Audrey Hepburn.

**Is it OK to think outside the box when it comes to your head piece or is a fascinator/hat our only option?
** It is a MUST to think outside of the box and be creative and unique with your headwear. This is the best and fun part of putting a race wear look together. The last thing you want is to blend in with everyone else. I'm drawn to pieces a little different as well.

What fashion-kit items are a MUST to take in your clutch in case of any emergencies?
I like to pack mints, some lip liner and blotting powder as I tend to get a little too shiny from all the excitement and running around from marquee to marquee. Band-Aids if you can remember is a smart idea and a mini bottle of Rexona depending on how big your clutch is.

A lot of people struggle with wearing heels all day. Is it EVER OK to kick off your heels at the end of the day while you’re waiting for a taxi?
N.O. It would be wise to pack a pair of flats for the end of a big day. I like to avoid this issue by not wearing extremely high heels in the first place so I can be comfortable.

What trends are we kicking to the curb this race season?
Bandage dresses are a no no and I think the crop top/skirt look has been overdone. No socks with a suit is also a fashion don't for the guys. It’s all about cool sock game.

**One for the boys: is it an absolute necessity that they match their belt to their shoes? Or is it fair game these days?
** I think you should never match shoes with your belt. You have to stay in the same colour theme but at the moment I'm seeing 'no belt' as the new trend for men.

**What’s the rule with jewellery on race day? Is it too much to wear a head piece plus earrings, plus a necklace etc? How do we decide what to go with?
** I like to have one staple piece to show off. I'm obsessed with big jewelled earrings as a statement accessory. If you've got a bold headpiece a small dainty earring and a necklace would be perfect to pair with it as it won’t take the attention away for the headpiece.

**What are some handy rules you stick to every race season that people might not otherwise think of?
** Less is more. Put effort into your makeup as it can be a massive staple and complete an outfit. I love experimenting with a coloured lipstick or a cat eye liner look.
