10 skin-loving foods

Want to have amazing skin? Pack a load of these into your diet...

They say you are what you eat and when it comes to your skin it’s definitely true. Too much pizza, fried food, sugar and zero vitamins will paint a pimply, dull story across your face. So if you want to have skin like a celeb, the first step is to fix what you put in your mouth. Up your vegie intake and get as many vitamins, healthy fats and antioxidants as you can into your diet.

Here are our 10 fave skin-loving foods:

1. Avocado

Avocadoes are stuffed with the healthy kind of fat that will have your face glowing, making them a smart snack. But wait, there’s more: they’re also a fab source of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant. Antioxa-what? Antioxidants neutralise “free radicals”, AKA the bad guys or molecules that can damage skin-plumping collagen and cause dryness, fine lines and wrinkles. In short, free radicals age you. If you want amazeballs skin, then you need to protect it by upping your intake of heroes like avocado.

2. Chia seeds

Chia seeds are the highest plant-based source of omega-3s. This healthy fat doesn’t just improve your concentration and help to stabilise your mood, it’s also an amazing anti-inflammatory. That means it can help fight skin conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis, and might even help calm down breakouts. Omegas-3s have also been shown to inhibit inflammation in the skin caused by nasty UV radiation. Time to start sprinkling chia seeds on everything!

3. Artichokes

Artichokes are high in antioxidants, so it’s no wonder eating these vegies has been tied to more luminous and healthy skin. They also can help with digestion and lower cholesterol. Amazing!

4. Chia seeds

We don’t know about you, but alfalfa sprouts were a regular part of our childhood. No? Well they should’ve been because they are the original multivitamin. They are brimming with calcium, silicon (which is vital for healthy hair and nails), skin-clearing zinc, folic acid, potassium, sodium AND vitamins K, E, C, B and A. They might be teeny but they fit a lot of goodness in. Add them to your salad for a healthy boost.

5. Red grapes

Did you know red grapes are a natural antihistamine? They’re a great way to help control the side effects of allergic reactions, you know, like bad skin. They also contain those good ol’ antioxidants and a powerful chemical called resveratrol, which is believed to be a great anti-inflammatory.

6. Strawberries

Strawberries are your new BFF. The fruit is not just low on the sugar scale, it’s also high in vitamin C. Lovely vit-C can help encourage your bod to make collagen, a protein that keeps your face firm and smooth by strengthening the tiny veins (capillaries) that supply blood to the skin.

7. Apples

Apples are an awesome source of beta carotene (BC), a provitamin that your bod turns into vitamin A. Studies suggest BC can protect the skin against sun damage, so in other words, it’s a smart way to fight premature ageing. #enoughsaid.

8. Pumpkin seeds

Roasted pumpkin seeds aren’t just a good snack for when you’re feeling saintly, they’re a nifty way to get a boost of zinc into your system. The mineral has been credited with clearing up skin probs like acne, by controlling the oil production that can make your face a pimple-fest.

9. Garlic

There’s a reason why garlic is fab at fighting the flu, it contains a chemical called allicin, and when it comes into contact with blood – like after you’ve digested it – it creates a super-product that is capable of killing off heaps of bad bacteria and viruses hanging out in your bod, including the kind playing havoc with your skin. Add in a few antioxidants, and you have one awesome food for your face.

10. Broccoli

Broccoli is a cruciferous vegie, which means it’s full of amazing anti-cancer vitamins and minerals that also love your bod. The green stuff is a great source of calcium and folate, which help with the healing process as well as vitamins A, C, E, K and B complex.
