The healthiest meal at ya local fast food joint, according to a nutritionist

Maybe KFC Zinger burgers aren’t so bad after all...

DISCLAIMER: We love a cheeky Macca’s run just as much as the next girl.

While we’d love to pretend our diet is one hundred per cent clean, one hundred per cent of the time, we practically LIVE for cheat day. (So does Khloe Kardashian BTW – see what she eats on cheat day here.) ‘Cause if you really feel like hitting up a fast food joint, that’s okay. Eat it, enjoy it and then get back on the bandwagon tomorrow.

Here, we speak to sports dietician Peta Carige to find out the best fast food options in Australia:

KFC

What to eat if it’s cheat day: “Zinger Burger. This will satisfy you, just, due to the protein content and satisfy KFC cravings for the least amount of energy.”

What to eat if you’re stuck and there aren’t any healthier options around: “Flat Bread Slider with a side salad or sweet potato mash. This is the healthiest choice you can make. Your satiety is met by the side of vegetables or salad and the flat bread slider gives you a hit of protein and carbs.”

McDonald’s

What to eat if it’s cheat day: “Grilled Chicken Caesar Wrap. It’s high in protein and contains some salad for a moderate energy intake.”

What to eat if you’re stuck and there aren’t any healthier options around: “I always recommend the Grilled Chicken Snack Wrap with a side salad for the best option when my clients get stuck.”

Oporto

What to eat if it’s cheat day: “Chicken Taco Bowl. It has the perfect balance of protein, quality carbs and salad. Meaning it’ll fill you up while fuelling you to get through your afternoon. The seasoning means you will feel like you are eating Oporto and satisfy cravings.”

What to eat if you’re stuck and there aren’t any healthier options around: Same as above. Yum!

Hungry Jacks

What to eat if it’s cheat day: “Grilled Chicken Classic is the lowest fat burger on the menu. It’s not very filling unfortunately so this will satisfy your cravings but not your hunger.”

What to eat if you’re stuck and there aren’t any healthier options around: “Toasted Ham Cheese Tomato Sandwich. It’s boring but if you get stuck, it’s a great healthy option for those road trip pit stops and really justifies the statement that there is 'no excuse to eat unhealthy'.”

Dominos

What to eat if it’s cheat day: "Vegorama Pizza . Let's face it, it doesn't really matter what you get on your pizza, it still tastes like pizza. So why not stock up on your vegetable intake and reduce your guilt?"

What to eat if you’re stuck and there aren’t any healthier options around: Ditto.

Pizza Hut

What to eat if it’s cheat day: “Pizza Hut is very energy dense so focus on quality of toppings so you are obtaining some nutritional value and not just energy. For this reason, the Prawn Supreme is the winner.”

What to eat if you’re stuck and there aren’t any healthier options around: LOL, nothing! Everything on the menu here is dripping in sweet, sweet oil.

Subway

What to eat if it’s cheat day: “Go for a 9 Grain Wheat Sub with Tuna and Salad. This is a great healthy and extremely filling option. Because it is made fresh, this is something that people are actually more likely to eat takeaway rather than packing their own soggy tuna and salad sandwich from home. If you are watching your weight, hold the sauce and cheese.”

What to eat if you’re stuck and there aren’t any healthier options around: Same as above. The Tuna and Salad Sub is a good all-rounder.

Guzman Y Gomez

What to eat if it’s cheat day: “Barramundi Burrito Bowl. It’s quite high in energy from the amount of rice and toppings, however, it’s very high in protein with 40 grams. Meaning it’ll fill you up for a very long time while giving you the taste of Mexican.”

What to eat if you’re stuck and there aren’t any healthier options around: “Beef Salad Bowl. With 23 grams of protein, it contains enough that it will fill you up with no guilt.”

Red Rooster

What to eat if it’s cheat day: “Quarter Chicken Classic Roast combo. It’s the healthiest way to meet your Red Rooster cravings with at least getting some vegetables intake in with two serves (three types) of vegetables served with it.”

What to eat if you’re stuck and there aren’t any healthier options around: “1/4 chicken (no fries) with a side of roast veggies and a side of crunchy coleslaw is the perfect guilt free option. If you want to make it even healthier than just avoid eating the skin of the chicken which is straight saturated fat.”
