Forget trying to decode your vagina’s mood, obsessing about what it looks like in gym tights or trialling that vaginal weightlifting trend, new research suggests there is
a much more pressing snatch matter at hand. It’s called vaginal atrophy.
Basically, vaginal atrophy is a pretty common condition that causes the vaginal walls to thin, due to low production of the hormone oestrogen. Symptoms can include discharge, a burning sensation and pain during sex. While it’s most common in women going through menopause or hormonal treatment, it can strike at any age. Gah! Fear not. There are a few ways to prevent the onset of these nasty symptoms.
And one of them is having regular orgasms. The increased blood flow to your nether regions keeps the tissue down there super elastic and oxygenated — O's are essentially vital exercise.
According to London-based Sex Therapist, Louise Mazanti, who spoke to New York Post on the topic, "if cells are not getting enough oxygen, they cannot eliminate waste from the tissue, which can cause inflammation that leads to problems such as vaginal atrophy."
When toxins build up down there, they can prevent nutrients from getting to the cells, leaving tissue thinner.
Before you get all gr8-I'm-single-AF, remember, it doesn't take two to orgasm. Mazanti says it best: “People very often say, ‘I don’t have a sex life because I don’t have a partner.' But forget about that and have a sexual relationship with yourself. It’s about using massage and touching the tissue so that it becomes alive, the blood flows and the tissue becomes elastic.”
