This post contains spoilers for 13 Reasons Why, so if you haven’t finished the series, stop reading now.
Here’s what’s still playing on our minds.
Did this scene foreshadow Alex’s suicide attempt?
While the whole show was focused on Hannah, the last-minute twist that revealed her one-time friend Alex had attempted suicide proved we – and the characters on the show – should have been paying closer attention to him and his behaviour. In the final episode, as Mr. Porter is about to listen to the tapes, Principal Bolan interrupts to inform him Alex is in critical condition after shooting himself in the head.
The biggest clue that Alex was contemplating ending his life? He cleaned his room. A brief scene showed Alex tidying up his closet, with his dad even noticing his cleaning efforts. This is something Hannah also did right before committing suicide, and according to WebMD, room cleaning falls into the ‘making preparations’ category of warning signs someone is planning to take their own life.
Did Alex actually attempt suicide?
Based on Alex’s behaviour, it sadly doesn’t seem out of character that he tried to take his own life. But another fan theory believes it may have been Tyler who shot Alex.
The final episode shows Tyler in his dark room surrounded by photos of the students featured on Hannah’s tapes. Given Tyler’s motives (more on this below), fans believe he may have been planning to eliminate the students in the photos – they made high school pretty shit for him as well.
So what does it mean when Tyler takes down Alex’s photo? It could mean his work with Alex is done, since we know Alex is in hospital with a gunshot wound to his head, or it could mean he was taking Alex off his hit list because of that one time Alex defended him against school bully Montgomery.
Who picked up Alex’s phone?
Zach was one of the ‘better’ students on Hannah’s tapes, and he seemed to grow close to Alex. Zach was practising his basketball shooting in the final episode when he got a message from Alex’s phone that read, “Please call.” This was off the back of Zach sending Alex a bunch of messages that weren’t responded to, so as soon as he gets the message, Zach calls Alex’s phone. Thing is, we know at this stage that Alex is in critical condition, so who picked up Alex’s phone?
What was Tyler planning with all those guns and ammunition?
One of the more chilling scenes in the final episode was when Tyler was seen loading the bottom of a trunk with guns and ammunition.
While it was obvious he’d bought at least one gun, seeing his collection or firearms has led to speculation that Tyler, who has also been on the receiving end of his fair share of bullying at Liberty High, was potentially planning a mass school shooting.
What’s the significance of the time stamps on the deposition tapes?
If you paid close attention during the final episode, you would have noticed the time stamps on the deposition tapes were set in the future – in November 2017.
It wouldn’t make sense for the show to make such a big mistake, which is why the most popular opinion about the time stamps is that 13 Reasons Why is set in real time, meaning some of the events from the tapes – including Jessica’s dramatic party, and Bryce’s rape of Hannah in his hot tub – haven’t even taken place yet.
Whoa. Need a minute?
According to this theory, first noticed by Moviepilot, “The biggest, most important takeaway from knowing this is that Hannah is still here. We still have the chance to help her and prevent this from happening. We can still save Hannah. There is still time.” And there is still time to help someone in your own life who could be going through something similar to Hannah.
What was Tony’s relationship to Hannah?
Tony was given the mammoth task of acting as a guardian to Hannah’s tapes. He showed up at all the right times – almost annoyingly so – when Clay was listening to them, but it was never clear why Hannah trusted Tony with her biggest secrets. Surely their relationship was deeper than the fact that he had an old-school tape recorder for her to use. He was friendly with Hannah’s mother, Olivia, as well, but even that wasn’t explained.
What could a possible second season be about?
Netflix hasn’t confirmed if 13 Reasons Why will come back for a second season, and there have been strong arguments for and against continuing the story. But given the success of the first season, there’s a good chance it will be picked up for a second season.
Hannah Baker’s story has pretty much wrapped, so following Alex’s suicide attempt could be another way for the show to explore similar themes with the same characters. Jay Asher, the author of the original young adult novel, would like to see a second season. He told Entertainment Weekly, “I’d just like a continuation of all those characters. I’m curious as well. What happens to Clay? How do people react to what Alex did at the very end? What’s going to happen to Mr. Porter? I’d thought of a sequel at some point. I’d brainstormed it, but decided I wasn’t going to write it. So I’d love to see it.”
There are so many loose ends with characters we got to know very well, so we’d definitely like to see their stories continue, too.
