WARNING: 13 Reasons Why spoilers below!
It was the gut-wrenching twist in the 13 Reasons Why finale that had us lost for words and on the edge of our seats literally needing to know what happens next.
But while the reveal that the mysterious gunshot victim at the beginning of the finale was actually Alex – who apparently suffered a self-inflicted bullet wound to the head – came as a horrible shock to us all, Miles Hazier, who plays the troubled teen in the series has revealed that the clues were actually there all along.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he said,
"It was interesting to see similarities between Alex and Hannah because there are a lot of warning signs throughout the season. I was able to talk to the writers and clock when he was crying out for help or showing that he's on the same path as Hannah."
In fact, the 22-year-old revealed there were several key scenes that served as warning signs to Alex’s fate.
"There's a scene where I'm walking and I fall into a pool, and at that point I knew what that meant," said Haizer, referring to the scene where he fell into Bryce's pool. "And there's a scene with my fake dad and he comes in and he's talking about me not doing a deposition and I knew what that was foreshadowing."
As for his thoughts on claims that the hugely popular series ‘glorifies’ suicide?
"That's a really strange position to take on the show,” he said,
“It definitely offers an alternative to suicide. The whole point is showing that Hannah felt like she didn't have anyone where in fact she did and everybody does... same with Alex."
