WARNING! This article contains spoilers for the ending of Avengers: Infinity War. Do not read any further if you haven't watched the film!

If you caught a screening of Avengers: Infinity War in the past week, chances are you've spent the every day since in a confused, sobbing daze. We mean, all your faves are dead?! The universe is in peril?! Spidey didn't want to go!!!

But when you're not crying over Bucky and his hot face disintegrating into nothingness, you might also have spent your time theorising. This is a superhero movie, so Thanos will definitely be defeated somehow… but who will be the one to do it? Could it be the mysterious superhero Nick Fury paged at the end of the movie?

A lot of fan theories floating around the internet have put Captain Marvel – the "Earth's mightiest hero!" – at the centre of Thanos' downfall. (Not sure who Captain Marvel is? Read up on her here!)

This makes sense: she's one of the last remaining heroes out there, she's super powerful, and she has some tricks up her lycra sleeves that might juuuuust be enough to tip Thanos and his purple ballsack-head over.

What are Captain Marvel’s powers?

Before we get into any discussions about whether the Captain get finish off Old Man Blue, let's revisit just what she can do.

As we saw from the first Infinity War, Thanos is super powerful – he's big, strong, and he now has a gauntlet that harnesses the power of all the Infinity Stones: the Space Stone (giving the user the ability to access any location in the universe instantly); the Mind Stone (the user has access to powerful 'mental abilities,' like mind control and manipulation); the Reality Stone (giving the user the ability to manipulate reality); the Power Stone (enhances the user's physical power, and has the ability to destroy entire planets at will); the Time Stone (allows the user to influence time); and the Soul Stone (not much is known about this one).

Captain Marvel on the other hand, also has a bunch of neat powers. She can fly six times the speed of light, she has superhuman strength, she has a "seventh sense" so she can see things coming, she has insane endurance and stamina, and she's an expert in hand-to-hand combat.

She also has the cool ability to shoot blasts of energy from her hands, and (sometimes) absorb massive amounts of energy back into herself (the comics have shown her doing this with everything from black holes to nuclear weapons… pow!).

Can Captain Marvel beat Thanos?

You want us to be brutally honest? Probably not!

Captain Marvel is very, very, very powerful – she's been called the most powerful and most mighty Avenger out there, so that makes her more powerful than Thor wielding his new axe Stormbreaker, Iron Man in all his suits and Hulk fully Hulked-the-fuck-out.

If she went up against Thanos without his glove, we're pretty sure she could kick his ass. But going up against someone who has the ability to control time, space, matter, reality and minds with the click of his fingers? Yikes. Big ask.

That being said, it doesn't mean that Captain Marvel won't be super instrumental in defeating him in the end – we think she'll have a huge part to play.

But Thanos' eventual defeat will likely be the result of the Avengers teaming up together (hence the title – the movie isn't called Captain Marvel and her cute Avenger sidekicks).

Which brings us to…

How does Captain Marvel defeat Thanos?

Like we said, her defeating Thanos will more likely be "her teaming up with the Avengers and managing to beat him through the power of epic strategy and love."

There are some theories floating around, though! Here are our faves:

Using the ~seventh stone~

In Infinity War, it's a pretty big thing that Thanos manages to gather all six of the Infinity Stones. You know, everyone dies because of it, etc.

But what if there was another stone Thanos didn't know about?

Reddit user TruthOfAlecius pointed out that, in the comics, there is a seventh stone called the Ego Stone, or the Ego Gem. While the true powers of the Ego Stone aren't fully known, it's possible it could come into play in the hands of Captain Marvel.

"She is believed to have a 7th sense," wrote TruthOfAlecius. "That's very interesting, because there is an actual [seventh] infinity stone in the Marvel comics "the Ego stone".

"This stone is known to be incredibly powerful and I have a feeling she might have it and be harnessing its power somehow..."

If the Avengers had their hands on just one Stone, it could be enough to tip the balance and give them the upper hand they need.

The multi-dimensional theory

Hold onto your knickers, this is getting DEEP.

The first part of the theory: In Ant-Man, good old Scott Lang introduced us the concept of the Quantum Realm – the space between atoms where time and space become irrelevant (Hank Pym's wife is supposedly trapped there). Ant-Man manages to enter and then leave it, but it could come into play in the next Avengers.

The second part of the theory: In Infinity War, Thanos does the dreaded Snap and half of the universe's population dies. The correct term is "cease to exist." But what if they were dead at all?

One Reddit user, accountfornerdstuff, says that half of the population aren't really dead, but in a different dimension.

"He used the infinity gauntlet to create another universe, using the reality, space and time stone.

"He used the mind and soul stone to transport all of the souls into the bodies who "dusted", and the power stone to enhance the ability of all the other stones."

The theory continues to suggest that Ant-Man could use his knowledge of the Quantum Realm…

"I believe that in searching for Hank Pym's wife in the quantum realm, Ant-Man and co. found out that the quantum realm provides doorways to alternate universes. Hank then creates the devices needed for them to safely enter these alternate universes."

… And once they're all together, Captain Marvel could use her powers to bring down Thanos, with the help of the reassembled Avengers.

Breaking the Soul Stone

Another "they're not dead, they're just somewhere else" theory is that the "dead" people are actually trapped within the Soul Stone.

"When Thanos went to find the Soul Stone with Gamora, Red Skull told him that in order to receive the stone, he had to give up something he loves. An "exchange" he called it, "a soul for a soul". It was never an exchange, but a method of crafting the soul stone. Gamora never died, the planet took her soul and used it to make the Soul Stone," said user CryptidLizard.

"Well, I don't think anybody actually died, instead the random half-population chosen by the gauntlet to die had their souls trapped inside the Soul Stone by Gamora.

"This is further supported by the fact that trapping souls inside itself is one of the key abilities of the Soul Gem."

Could Captain Marvel find a way to destroy the Soul Stone and release everyone from its realm?

Captain Marvel uses the Infinity Stones

We thought, since old Thano is the one wearing the glove, he would be the only one to be able to use it. Could we be wrong?

Reddit user Flamma_Man points out something really cool, that Captain Marvel might just be powerful enough to manipulate them without even putting on the dang glove.

"The Infinity Stones were created by six singularities. Most likely gravitational singularities, which are a region in spacetime in which tidal gravitational forces become infinite at the center of a black hole," write Flamma_Man.

"Get this though, in the comics, Carol Danvers could once attain a form called Binary that, wait for it, actually siphoned power from a white hole. A white hole is theoretical region of space which is the exit-point of a singularity's ultimate inward collapse out of this universe and into another.

"Basically the opposite of a black hole. The opposite of a gravitational singularity. The opposite of the Infinity Stones.

"I theorize that she has the ability to absorb the energy of The Infinity Stones and make them inert permanently or just long enough for Thanos to be vulnerable."

Damn, girl.
