'High School Musical' is coming back as a TV show and our hearts are soaring, flying

Gettin’ our heads back in the game.

High School Musical fans, brace yourselves for some excellent news: our favourite East High Wildcats are coming back in a major way!

OK, you might need to settle down a little bit, as this doesn’t mean Troy (Zac Efron), Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) and the rest of the gang are returning for a reunion (yet). But we might see them pop up in the new High School Musical TV series that could soon be in the works.

It may have been more than 10 years since the Wildcats graduated in High School Musical 3: Senior Year, but this means it’s the perfect time for Disney to bring back the franchise — both for OG fans, and for a younger crowd who may not be that familiar with the story.

Variety reported that Disney is creating the series to air on its upcoming streaming service, which will launch in 2019. (This is the reason all Disney content will disappear from Netflix by 2019, so it can move to its new digital home.) At this stage there will also be a Star Wars TV series, a TV adaptation of Monsters Inc., and a new original Marvel series.

Basically, it sounds like we’ll have enough reason to fork out for another streaming service, on top of the three we have at the moment. (Tip: Get someone else in your family to foot this bill, so you can be the parasite for once.)

There’s no word on who will join the cast, but we are crossing all our fingers and toes that we at least get a couple of cameos from the original gang. Maybe they’re even old enough to return as teachers now? What a time.
