Unless you're living under a rock, you would know full well that the cast of Netflix's Riverdale are hot property. In fact, the show's popularity has been propelled by the main cast's seriously good looks, brilliant acting, IRL hookups and flair for social media.

But before they became the megastars we live and breath for, they were up and coming young actors and actresses who did some real quirky roles to land themselves by Sweetwater River.

KJ Apa, Archie Andrews

Before KJ scooped up the coveted role of local heartthrob and potential Serpent Archie Andrews he was back home in New Zealand playing the role of Kane Jenkins on Shortland Street.

If you've never heard of Shortland Street, it's essentially an Aussie version of Neighbours, mixed with all the romance and drama of Home & Away.

The role of Kane was apparently introduced at the time to reflect the high rates of youth suicide in New Zealand and even saw the character of Kane attempt suicide on screen. KJ was praised for his portrayal and the show was acclaimed due its sensitivity around the issue.

As a part of his 2014 press tour, Ed joined Shortland St in a cameo role alongside KJ as a music mentor and pal.

Camila Mendes, Veronica Lodge

It's the age-old Hollywood tale, do a really good commercial and the rest is history. Drew Barrymore did McDonalds, Brad Pitt did Pringles and Camila Mendes did Ikea, and it landed her the part as some of the only acting experience she had before landing a lead part on Riverdale.

Cole Sprouse, Jughead Jones

Perhaps the most well-known teen cast member, Cole Sprouse has been gracing our screens for quite some time now. His first ever role was alongside funnyman Adam Sandler in Big Daddy in 1999, where he and his twin brother Dylan played Julian, kid abandoned on his father's door-step one day. Cole then went on to act in a host of TV series including MadTV, That 70's Show, and Disney Channel's That's So Raven and Hannah Montana before he and his brother landed their very own, very successful The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. The show was one of Disney Channel's most successful series, lasting over three seasons and even got its own spin-off The Suite Life on Deck.

Lili Reinhart, Betty Cooper

Lili developed a passion for singing and acting from the age of 10 and frequently begged her mum to take her to New York auditions. Her first breakout role was on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, i.e. the best Law & Order. She also had some small roles in films The Good Neighbour, Miss Stevens, Forever's End, The Kings of Summer, Not Waving but Drowning and Lilith. On her way she also appeared in some short films including For Today (2010) and The Most Girl Part of You (2011).

Madelaine Petsch, Cheryl Blossom

Madelaine much like Camila had appeared in a commercial before breaking on to Netflix's radar. She starred alongside an adorable puppy and two cute pals in a campaign for Coca-Cola in 2014. She then went on to star in a few films The Hive (2015) and The Curse of Sleeping Beauty (2016) before landing the dream role of everybody's fave Cheryl Blossom.

Ashleigh Murray, Josie Mccoy

Ashleigh's first breakout role was in Welcome to New York (2012), a comedy short film and about the cast's first unique experiences in New York City. The film was well received with critics and went on to put Ashleigh on the radar of casting directors.

Charles Melton, Reggie Mantle

Perhaps one of the young cast's most established members, Charles Melton's has been working director Ryan Murphy for some time, appearing in Glee and American Horror Story: Hotel.
