Teen’s Instagram account deleted following underwear selfie

Because it’s not as if Insta is full of that kind of thing, right?

Teen’s Instagram account deleted

Instagram is the place celebs, fitness lovers and many regular girls often go to show off their bikini bodies or sexy underwear poses – one quick scroll through Miranda Kerr, Cara Delevingne or butt-selfie queen Jen Selter’s feed will prove that. But when this US teen did the exact same thing, the big wigs at Insta HQ shut down her account immediately.

Samm Newman is 19 years old and says she used to self-harm and get bullied because of her appearance. She claims that the social media site provided a sort of solace for her after she started college and discovered a growing positive body movement.

"My Instagram, it was my safe place because when I was there, I could share anything," Samm explains to NBC.

Her account was closed after she posted the above snap wearing a polka dot bra, showing minimal flesh. She says that she had previously posted very similar shots without any consequences.

"I didn't find them or the bra at all inappropriate," she says.

"They covered me entirely and I've seen pictures like that all over Instagram."

Looking at the kind of shots these smaller-framed girls can post repeatedly without any penalising; it’s obvious that what happened to Samm is blatant size discrimination.

After NBC reported on the event, Instagram reinstated Samm’s account and issued the following statement:

When our team processes reports from other members of the Instagram community, we occasionally make a mistake. In this case, we wrongly removed content and worked to rectify the error as soon as we were notified. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Luckily the incident hasn’t knocked Samm’s confidence, or her mission to help spread the positive body image movement.

"Fat is not a bad word," she says.

"How confident can you be if you keep censoring yourself because people don't want to look at you? I'm going to make a difference in the world, regardless of whether Instagram cooperates or not."

You go, girl! Instagram needs more Samm Newmans, if you ask us.
