With less than one month to go before the premiere of The Handmaid's Tale season two, Hulu has released a new trailer and as always, there's plenty to unpack. The 98-second preview starts with June (Elisabeth Moss) suggesting that she did make it out of the Commander's house after all, with Nick's (Max Minghella) help, but she's not entirely free. "Is this what freedom looks like? What will happen when I get out? There probably is no out," she says. "Gilead is within you."
In other scenes, Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) is shamed by the Commander (Joseph Fiennes) for being nice to Offred, the Commander shoots someone in the woods, Emily (Alexis Bledel) is struggling in the Colonies, and Moira (Samira Wiley) is at a protest holding a sign that reads, "My name is Moira" (others at the protest are doing the same thing with their own pre-Gilead names). And then there's this haunting shot of dozens of handmaids on nooses. Instead of a wall, they're out on a field, waiting to die.
Showrunner Bruce Miller previously teased that season two will focus on motherhood and specifically, Offred's pregnancy. In one scene of the trailer, Nick tells her, "I'm trying to keep you alive, you and the baby," but things look grim.
Like season one, season two will include several flashbacks. With this in mind, don't get too excited to see Serena at a protest. "Future of mankind depends on what we do today!" she screams. But look closely: the Commander is there, they both look younger. It's definitely, maybe a flashback… unless Hulu is toying with our emotions.
The first two episodes of The Handmaid's Tale season two will premiere on Hulu April 25.
