For the past seven years, the Pretty Little Liars cast has been grilled for spoilers during basically every interview, red carpet appearance, and fan interaction ever. For the actors, that must be ridiculously intense! I mean, can you imagine if everyone you spoke to wanted you to slip up and reveal something major? But the cast managed to keep everything under wraps... or so we thought.
Troian Bellisario, who plays Spencer, admitted on Monday that some of the show's plot twists were so insane, she was comfortable revealing them on purpose, because she knew no one would take her seriously.
"I feel like in the past I've definitely said the truth about some things because I knew people wouldn't believe me," she told Entertainment Weekly. "That was the best way to keep the secret — to bluntly say exactly what would happen and then say, 'But can you ever trust me?' And because I've been on a show with the word 'liar' in the title, nobody believed me! I think I said it about, like, Mona at one point."
Showrunner I. Marlene King says she gave away an upcoming twist, too, except she didn't do it on purpose. It was a total accident, and when she tried to cover it up, fans noticed the goof.
"I've only let something slip one time and it was you in the orange jumpsuit," she explained, pointing to Ashley Benson, who plays Hanna. "You came to a meeting in your orange jumpsuit and I lied because it was around Halloween. I said, 'No no, we're dressing up for Halloween,' but fans knew. That's the only time I've screwed up."
But aside for that one incident, Marlene says no one else has ruined the show with accidental spoilers.
"In the age of social media, we've been really lucky that nobody has, excluding me that time with Hanna in the orange jumpsuit, messed anything up," she said.
(Um, but didn't Ashley recently hint that Spencer and Toby might not reunite in time for the finale? Or was that on purpose?)
