Following the shooting rampage in Isla Vista last Friday and the #YesAllWomen movement that came with it – an eye-opening Tumblr account about violence against women is gaining traction online in a big way.
‘When Women Refuse’ collects stories of violence inflicted on women who reject sexual advances, and it makes for some pretty harrowing reading.
The blog was started by feminist activist Deanna Zandt in the wake of last week's shootings, which Elliot Rodger claimed to have planned to “punish all females for the crime of depriving me of sex.”
“We still don’t view gender-based violence as a large cultural issue — we tend to think of these as isolated incidences,” Zandt told Think Progress.
From a woman getting punched in the face for turning down a guy in a bar, to a wife who got set on fire by her husband, to a man who was acquitted of shooting an escort who wouldn’t have sex with him - the list is ongoing and increasingly depressing.
The site encourages women to share their stories in the hope that the fact that this is a worryingly common problem is recognised and addressed.
