Who is Captain Marvel? The meaning behind *that* symbol at the end of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

What does it all mean?!

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for the ending of Avengers: Infinity War and Captain Marvel. You've been warned.

If you made it to the end of Avengers: Infinity War part one this week, and you were emotionally stable enough to watch through to the credits, then you saw the mysterious end scene.

Basically, as the entire world's going to shit thanks to Thanos and his magical mitten (jeez… thanks, dude), the scene brings back two beloved characters, Agent Maria Hill and Nick Fury.

These two, who you might remember from the first Avengers, Captain America: Winter Soldier, and Avengers: Age of Ultron, are in the middle of a city when they're both disintegrated into dust.

But before Hill and Fury go all confetti on us, Fury manages to get out a message to a mysterious recipient, who sends back one single symbol on the pager.

Confused? So were we. But thanks to a bit of internet sleuthing, we've got all the answers for you.

Was that Captain Marvel’s symbol at the end of Infinity War?

You've got a good eye! It definitely was. Captain Marvel's personal symbol is usually shown as a gold eight-pointed star on a gold stripe, with red on one side and blue on the other.

Is Captain Marvel male or female?

With 'Captain' being a gender-neutral title, it's not obvious, but Captain Marvel is indeed female!

Captain Marvel, whose real name is Carol Danvers, is also sometimes known as Ms. Marvel, Captain Danvers and Warbird.

Which actress is playing Captain Marvel?

Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson is set to play Captain Marvel! The actress was cast in the role in July 2016, after much deliberation. She announced the news on her Instagram by posting a selfie wearing a Marvel Studios hat.

Here's a look at her all Captain Marvel-ed up:

Other top contenders for the role were rumoured to include Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Jessica Chastain, and Natalie Dormer.

What is Captain Marvel’s backstory?

Like all the other Avengers and superheroes in the Marvel universe, Carol Danvers has quite an interesting backstory. To save you reading hundreds of comics and books, here's a quick rundown.

Carol Danvers was an officer and pilot in the United States Air Force and a close buddy of alien hero Mar-Vell (Mar-Vell is a Kree – you might recognise this race from Guardians of the Galaxy; Ronan the Accuser AKA Lee Pace was Kree). During a freak accident explosion, Danvers' DNA is fused with Mar-Vell's, giving her superhuman powers.

She goes on to take the moniker of 'Captain Marvel,' and fights crime. Badass.

Of course, we don't know which version of her backstory will be used in her upcoming film with Brie Larson, but we think that might be the gist of it.

What are Captain Marvel’s powers?

Over the course of the comics, Captain Marvel has several powers and abilities including (but usually not limited to) superhuman strength, flight, stamina and endurance, the ability to shoot blasts of energy from her fingertips, and a Spidey-sense-esque "seventh sense," which means she can see stuff coming.

She also has a range of cool human powers that come from being in the army, including hand-to-hand combat, spy skills and weapons training.

Will Captain Marvel fight Thanos?

That's the question on everyone's lips! Considering Fury called the Captain, and everyone else is kinda… dead… most people think that she will take on Thanos and his gauntlet in the next film.

As for the fight itself, it's tricky. With her amazing powers and character, she has been named "quite possibly Marvel's mightiest Avenger," beating out Thor, Captain America and Iron Man.

If she went up against Thanos, most people seem to think it would be a pretty evenly-matched fight. Thanos is super powerful and has that glove, but Marvel has the upper hand in a lot of areas including speed (she can fly six times the speed of light), endurance (she doesn't tire easily) and her 'seventh sense' (so she might be able to anticipate his moves before he makes them).

And since she isn't the only Avenger left standing, a combination of Captain Marvel, Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow and Hulk might just be enough to put him down for good.

What will the plot of the ‘Captain Marvel’ movie be?

For fans hoping that the Captain Marvel movie, which comes out before the next Avengers, will be set in the same time and place that Infinity War left off… we have some bad news.

The upcoming Captain Marvel movie will actually be an origin story for the character, and will be set in the '90s when she's an air force pilot. The current plot for it reads, "Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races."

The Skrulls will also be making an appearance, and Lee Pace will be reprising his role as Ronan the Accuser. Jude Law will play a dashing Mar-Vell.
