How 14 Men on Tinder responded when I said "I know" to their compliments

I was legitimately surprised.

tinder compliments

In one of the most mysterious paradoxes of masculinity, it seems that sometimes men who compliment you don't always like it when you agree with their compliment. I know I've definitely gotten nasty messages in the past when daring to acknowledge someone's praise or even just saying "thanks" on dating apps. It can be frustrating when men respond that way — like they want it to be a sexy secret that you have a physical body, and how dare you for having the agency to be proud of it. Fun! Curious to see how pissed guys would get if I agreed with their compliments, I told 14 guys on Tinder that I too, was aware of my hotness, and this is what happened:

1. This guy who just wanted to hang

You have to respect a dude who understands the nuance and vulnerability behind sending the exact same message twice with new punctuation. I've been there.

2. This guy who just breezed past it all

Like water off a duck's back!

3. This guy who was ~a little~ salty

But overall seemed still interested and unbothered, so good for you Guy No. 3!

4. This transparent dude

Nope, but flattered again! While grammar prevented me from replying "I know" here like I did to everyone else, I thought his compliment would still work for the experiment.

5. This guy who called me cocky

Hmmmm ... a lot of ego for somebody who spelled "someone" as two words, methinks.

6. This guy who liked my name

I thought he was gonna get rude on me (as I did for basically all these, let's be real) but instead he went doubly nice. Nice!

7. This guy who just wanted to have a conversation

OK, but TBH, did he say anything back that I could've responded to? I get his argument, but maybe after, like, a wall of unreciprocated messages, not just one comment.

8. This roller coaster of a conversation

What a ride! Also, never in my life has my silence in response to a "wholesome date" actually meant "please eff me good with no strings attached."

9. This scholar

Nope, but I appreciate the effort to keep the convo goin'.

10. This guy who was unfazed

THIS. THIS IS HOW YOU TIND.

11. Another dude who was unfazed

Two in a row!

12. This guy who was also a little salty but overall seemed chill

There's only room for my manic energy in a relationship, sorry bud.

13. This guy who just wanted to know about my hair color

Not bad.

14. And lastly, this dude who also wasn't threatened by my response

A very stable, mature response TBH.

Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by the majority of reactions I did get. The only other two times I'd fired off little "I know, thanks" messages to guys on Tinder, I got some pretty bad responses. So whether it's because men in general are becoming more woke or because this was just a lucky sample size, I'm glad there are dudes out there who could fuck with the confidence of a woman agreeing with them. But again, the fact that I started this experiment outright expecting to get a lot of rudeness and hate doesn't bode too well either. In an ideal world, women wouldn't have to walk around acting like a dude's compliment is the surprise of the century. If acting overly confident and proud in this experiment taught me anything, it's that some guys out there aren't only not threatened by assertive women, they like it.
