This quote about gun control vs. abortion, which makes an excellent point, is going viral again

“No young woman needing reproductive freedom has ever murdered a roomful of strangers.”

In light of the Las Vegas shooting over the weekend — which saw gunman Stephen Paddock take aim at people attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival from his 32nd floor hotel room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino — the usual outpouring of love, prayers and support for those affected has been different to previous tragedies.

Paddock’s actions resulted in the deaths of 59 innocent people, and injured more than 500. His attack has been called the most deadly massacre in modern U.S. history.

Which is why people have urged others on social media not to just pray for the victims and those affected, but to use their collective influence to call for gun control reforms in the U.S.

When police stormed Paddock’s hotel room, they found 23 firearms. It’s since been reported that he smuggled them into the hotel in at least 10 suitcases over a four-day period, and checked in using the ID of his girlfriend, Marilou Danley.

Of all the beautifully-designed Instagram tiles calling for better gun regulation, there is one quote that’s been making the rounds on social media again because it compares how easy it is for someone to acquire a gun in America to how difficult it is for a woman to get an abortion.

The quote reads:

This stirring quote has been attributed to Gloria Steinem, but the feminist icon has denied that it came from her. (The actual author is still unknown.)

There’s a longer version of the quote that ends with, “No woman getting an abortion has killed a room full of people in seconds,” and it’s so true.

Bustle also had an easy-to-understand graphic drawn up to compare the two, showing the convoluted steps involved with getting an abortion to the one step that’s needed to buy a gun.

While some people have said that now is not the time to bring up the gun control debate — like Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, who said she wanted to avoid “political debate” when she addressed media on Monday — it seems like the perfect time. If not now, when? When something like this happens again?

Vox published an amazing piece about what happened in Australia when 650,000 private guns were confiscated, after Martin Bryant killed 35 people and wounded 28 in the massacre in Port Arthur in 1996.

In short: the number of murders and suicides dropped dramatically.
