These heinous male responses to #MeToo remind us exactly why it's so important

Trust d*ckheads to ruin a good thing.

It’s typical that a powerful social media movement like #MeToo, which encouraged women (and men) to share their experiences with sexual harassment and sexual assault to know that they are not alone, will come up against shitty responses.

And, surprise, surprise — most of these dickwad comments come from men.

Just in case opening up about some of the most horrific experiences of their lives wasn’t enough, people who shared their stories as part of the #MeToo campaign had to see other gross tweets in the mix.

Like the guy who wrote, “I don't believe all these girls changing their status to 'me too.' I don't think there's anyone willing to sexually harass some of them.”

And the twat who posted, “Most obnoxious Me Too Harvey Weinstein posts are by fat ugly women who are proud they were abused. Hot women don't need to boast ‘Me too!’”

Comments like these play a huge role in why most people stay silent about harassment and assault in the first place. And even celebrities aren’t immune.

After the initial reports about Harvey Weinstein’s alleged sexual harassment of actresses came out, Lena Dunham wrote a piece for The New York Times about ‘Harvey Weinstein and the Silence of the Men.’ In the article, she called out the men in Hollywood who had helped cover up other men’s inexcusable behaviour.

It didn’t take long for someone to create a gross meme of Lena, using paparazzi photos of the actress exercising, with the words, ‘When you realize you ain’t really Harvey Weinstein’s type, but you need a movie deal.’

Lena initially tweeted about the meme, but the tweet has been deleted. Instead, she called out her business partner, Jenni Konner, for telling her to focus on positivity — and for also taking away her computer so she couldn’t respond back to trolls.

Remember how we were told when we were younger, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all?” If only these men and mean meme-creators could keep that in mind.
