Why Obama is President of our feminist hearts

The most powerful man in the whole world has penned the BEST essay on feminism. Prepare for some serious feels, guys…

By Lorna Gray

Just when our feminist hearts thought no world leader could surpass the awesomeness of Justin Trudeau, Barack Obama has dropped the motherflippin’ mic on the world, penning the most incredible essay on being a feminist.

Glamour magazine published the piece: “President Barack Obama Says, "This Is What a Feminist Looks Like" (HUGE props to Glamour for this, BTW), in which he explores coming into feminism, raising his daughters, and his hopes for the future in regard to gendered issues. Here are a few of our favourite bits:

“The progress we’ve made in the past 100 years, 50 years, and, yes, even the past eight years has made life significantly better for my daughters than it was for my grandmothers. And I say that not just as President but also as a feminist.”

SERIOUSLY. ALL THE YASS.

“I’d like to think that I’ve been pretty aware of the unique challenges women face—it’s what has shaped my own feminism. But I also have to admit that when you’re the father of two daughters, you become even more aware of how gender stereotypes pervade our society. You see the subtle and not-so-subtle social cues transmitted through culture. You feel the enormous pressure girls are under to look and behave and even think a certain way.”

“We need to keep changing the attitude that raises our girls to be demure and our boys to be assertive, that criticises our daughters for speaking out and our sons for shedding a tear. We need to keep changing the attitude that punishes women for their sexuality and rewards men for theirs.”

“Michelle and I have raised our daughters to speak up when they see a double standard or feel unfairly judged based on their gender or race—or when they notice that happening to someone else. It’s important for them to see role models out in the world who climb to the highest levels of whatever field they choose. And yes, it’s important that their dad is a feminist, because now that’s what they expect of all men.”

President on point or what?!

He’s the embodiment of what a father, husband (and world leader!) should be. Sasha and Malia are lucky to have such awesome parents. What an amazing way to start wrapping up your presidential term, huh?!

We seriously encourage you to read the whole thing here.

On a completely unrelated note (but a frickin’ amazing note all the same), he’s also a big old fanboy of Friday Night Lights. This information seriously does things to us, man.

Basically, the best thing ever happened: Connie Britton aka Tami Taylor posted a birthday message to President Obama but check her caption:

“This was the first time I met him, and about fell over when he greeted me with "clear eyes full hearts can't lose!"

We are actually vomiting rainbows RN.

The POTUS is a Tim Riggins fanboy (probs). And he certainly loves Coach and Tami Taylor as much as you do.

Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose INDEED.
