A trip to Bali has turned into a horror story for a group of holiday makers with the passenger ferry they were travelling on exploding off the coast of Bali, killing two people and injuring up to 20 others.

Fatalities included an Austrian women and a woman of European nationality, who died after suffering head injuries. No Australians are believed to have been involved the accident.

Police are still investigating what exactly caused the boat to combust, which was ferrying 40 passengers and crew to nearby Gili Islands, however they do not suspect foul play and have ruled out a bomb.

Karangasem district police chief Sugeng Sudarso tells the AFP the explosion occurred shortly after departure, only 200m from shore, and at this stage it’s suspected to have been caused by malfunctioning battery located near the fuel tank.

"We are still questioning the boat captain while a forensic team is examining the scene to find of cause of the explosion,'' police chief Sudarso explained.

Those injured were taken nearby Denpasar hospital. Our thoughts are with all those involved.
