So today in ‘really important people who keep doing dumb shit’, White House press secretary Sean Spicer has truly outdone himself by making the mind-boggling claim that Hitler did not use chemical weapons against his own people. Seemingly denying – or at least momentarily forgetting – that the Nazi regime systematically murdered millions of Jewish people in concentration camps via exactly that.
Firstly, surely the man in the most important communications, media-facing role on the planet should know that the biggest no-go in media comms (or general comms, or just being a human being with any level of social awareness or compassion) is DO NOT COMPARE ANYTHING TO HITLER, FFS. And secondly, ya know, get your very obvious and basic facts straight.
“Someone as despicable as Hitler didn’t even sink to using chemical weapons,” he said, as a heavy air of ‘WTF, DID HE ACTUALLY JUST SAY THAT? IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING’ descended on a taken-aback press crowd. “You have to ask yourself if you are Russia, is this a country and a regime you want to align yourself with?”
Because it’s 2017, Twitter brought the lolz to the situation. But even the funniest tweets can’t erase the fact that this actually happened, and that it isn’t even the most depressing thing about Donald Trump’s administration.
