This is horrific: Women in Texas now have to buy 'rape insurance' in case they need abortions

More bad news for American women.

Did you know that ‘rape insurance’ is a thing? Well, it is now, after Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed HB 214 into law on Tuesday, which bans abortion coverage from private, state-offered and Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance plans. And just when we thought things couldn’t get worse, there aren’t even exceptions for rape, incest or foetal abnormalities.

Abbott said in a statement on his website:

So if women want to be able to have abortions in the chance they are raped, they need to buy separate insurance from December 1.

Is this real life? Women are basically being told that they have to fork out more so they can have an abortion, in case they are raped.

Rape is a completely unpredictable life event, and no one should have to pay more — especially when it’s someone else’s crime. This is essentially punishing victims of sexual assault, and low-income women will be hit hard.

But the conservative leaders and lawmakers of Texas know nothing about that. After all, this is the same state that wants to lock up women who’ve had abortions, and wants to further shame them by having medical facilities cremate or bury foetal remains that have been aborted.

In the U.S., the cost of having an abortion can start at $300 for the abortion pill, and up to $3,000 for a surgical abortion.

One couple recently had to terminate their child when it was discovered the foetus had a chromosomal abnormality incompatible with life at 21 weeks. The procedure cost them $64,000, but they were lucky their insurance covered the procedure and hospital stay. If this had happened after December, the money would have come from their own pockets.
