An ad for new horror movie 'The Nun' was so effing scary that YouTube had to take it down

YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.

One of the most anticipated horror movies of the year is almost here! The Nun, the fifth instalment in The Conjuring movie series, is set to premiere next month, and of course the promos and trailers are all over the place.

They're scary, because the movie is scary! But one recent ad promoting the movie has seriously disturbed the YouTube-viewing masses.

In fact, it was so HORRIFYING that YouTube was having none (nun!) of it. Zing! Look, you have to make jokes in the face of abject terror like this, OK?

The 6-second video begins with a black screen with the volume/sound emoji displayed at the centre — basically a way to distract and convince you that your volume controls are broken. Except, psych, they're not! So as you fumble with them and wait for the rest of the video to play, that's when The Nun gets you.

This jumpscare is really too much, so Twitter user @bbydvas decided to send a message to the public about it:

They tweeted, "WARNING! If you see an ad on youtube with the volume sign being turned down and nothing else, ITS A JUMPSCARE for the new NUN movie coming out. I advise you look away and/or turn down the volume if you have anxiety or just straight up hate jumpscares, pls rt to save a life".

Watch the ad below... if you dare. If you're really a masochist who wants to freak themselves out, turn your volume up. But again, if you have anxiety or just not a big fan of scary dead nuns' faces popping up on your screen, please just do yourself a favour and don't!

It's clear that @bbydvas wasn't the only victim to the ad — which, by the way, is too short to skip. The warning got 136,000 retweets and 150,000 likes, and because of the major wave of backlash, YouTube responded and decided to take it down.

The company's official Twitter account replied saying that the ad violated their "shocking content policy". So, for now at least, you can watch your makeup tutorials in peace without having to worry about NUNS.

The Nun is set to premiere in Australian theatres on September 6. But note: the actual full-length trailer for the movie is still out there, and it's got a killer jumpscare of its own in there. (OK, it's at the 1:20 mark if you're nervous.)
