Can faking an orgasm help you have a real one? (Spoiler alert: Yes it can!)

Fake it 'til you make it.

Faking Orgasms Gives You Real Orgasms

Did you know that a whopping 80 per cent of women fake orgasms at some point in their life? Though that stat makes us roll our eyes in shame at the men of the world, there is a slight glimmer of hope amongst all this fakery, because apparently faking an orgasm can actually bring on a real one.

A recent study done by the Journal of Sexual Archives, which surveyed 481 heterosexual females (who are all sexually active but not in serious relationships), discovered that the reasons for faking orgasms come under four sections:

1. To protect the man's feelings (called 'Altruistic Deceit')
2. Out of fear and insecurity (and hoping their partner has a positive experience)
3. Faking it to end sex quicker
4. And faking it in attempt to bring on a legit orgasm

So does it actually work? Can you actually bring on a real orgasm by faking it?! Well, Lovehoney expert, Tracey Cox, reckons you sure can!

The technique is actually called "elevated arousal," and according to Tracey it involves "faking an orgasm to make yourself feel more turned on, based on the theory that if you act out the thing you want to happen, sometimes it will."

Kinda like when you put something out into the universe and it actually brings it about.

Women in this particular study said if they pretended to orgasm, their partner got more excited, which got them more excited. Tracey Cox says that by re-enacting the lead up to the real thing — breathing faster, noise, the whole show — you might just be able to push yourself over the threshold.

However, it's not an instant-fix situation…

Tracey warns that it's not the best to use the "fake it til you make it" technique at the beginning of a relationship, unless you explain what you are doing. Reason being, how will your partner ever learn what is actually going to give you an orgasm if they think they're doing it already? There is nothing wrong with constructive feedback because communication is the key to good sex.
