Scary fact: two thirds of the world’s population have an STI

And they might not even know it.

If you’ve ever thought condoms are kinda overkill then you need to read this ‘cause it turns out STIs are actually wayyy more common than we thought. In fact, a recent set of statistics released by the World Health Organisation shows that apparently a mind-boggling TWO THIRDS of the world’s population have herpes. Yep, you read that right.

More specifically, over 3.7 billion people under 50 (that is 67% of the earth’s population) are infected with herpes virus type 1(HSV-1), the strain responsible for cold sores etc, while 417 million people are carrying type 2 (HSV-2), present on the genitals.

Let that just sink in for a minute.

In high school we learnt that herpes type 1 can be passed on through smooching your crush when they had a cold sore whereas type 2 is sexually transmitted, but the report says that the fact many people don’t know they have type 1 is causing an increase in type 2.

But how, you ask? Oral sex. The stats show that 140 million people between 15 and 49 have already been infected with the genital version of type 1 herpes.

So if you’re left wondering how the eff you can stay safe when you’re having sexy time, it all comes back to your high school sex-ed. Rather than advocating abstinence (‘cause lol), it’s time to get back on board the condom train.

In addition, make sure you refrain from the blow job shiz if you’re with cold sore and save yourself the worry. Simples.
