Sunset Romance

The resort-style town of Broome is a true paradise

Where is it?

Fancy an outback location with equal doses of sunshine and sea air? Broome has all that and more. Home to Cable Beach, a 22-kilometre stretch of white sand, this town in the Kimberley region of WA is a pristine honeymoon spot. Visit in winter when you're guaranteed sunny days and balmy temps. With the rich pearling history, spectacular scenery and a chilled vibe, you'll feel like you've landed in an idyllic tropical oasis.

Things to do

… for romantics

You can't come to Broome without booking a camel ride, preferably at sunset for added romance. The team at Red Sun Camels (redsuncamels.com.au) will look after you with a sedate ride on Cable Beach. You can also enjoy the ever-changing sunset walking along the beach or sipping cocktails at Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa's Sunset Bar & Grill. Or for something truly special, view it from the water on a picturesque Intombi Sunset Sail pearl lugger tour (broomelugger.com). If you're lucky, you'll see the Staircase to the Moon - where the full moon rises over the Roebuck Bay mudflats at low tide to create the illusion of stairs climbing to the sky. It only occurs three nights a month from March to October. Go to australiasnorthwest.com.

… for food lovers

There are a number of eateries in the Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa complex if you're staying there. Enjoy fine food and indigenous delicacies at the Club Restaurant, head to the Sunset Bar & Grill for light fare, or the poolside Thai Pearl for Thai curries and stir-fries. Outside the resort, try the Old Zoo Café (zoocafe.com.au) for fresh seafood and Asian-inspired dishes. Sample locally produced beers at Matso's Broome Brewery (matsos.com.au), including the multi award-winning Smokey Bishop Dark Lager, then head to their restaurant.

… for relaxation

Lounging by the adults-only Ocean Pool at the Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa is a prerequisite. Next on your bliss list should be a relaxing treatment at the Chahoya Spa. Go nuts and treat yourself to the five-and-a-half-hour Indulgence Package - exfoliation, vichy, massage, facial and mani or pedi with a light lunch included! And for retail therapy, visit the Broome Courthouse Markets, on every weekend from 8am until 1pm.

Where to stay

The Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa (cablebeachclub.com) makes an ideal base thanks to its beachfront location, tropical gardens and helpful staff. Pool Terrace Studios start from $424 a night; Spa Superior Bungalows start from $604 per night and come with a spa-jet bath tub; while the Villas, from $1036 a night, have a private courtyard with an outdoor shower, plunge pool and butler - how civilised! Room rates include airport transfers and daily breakfast.
